Curriculum
South Shore Fine Arts Academy will focus on students' progress towards standards based, clearly defined and communicated end-of-year outcomes. Students will be assessed at regular intervals to monitor their progress towards expected outcomes. Teachers will make curricular and instructional decisions in direct response to identified student needs. South Shore Fine Arts Academy's well integrated curriculum will include:
Reading/Language Arts instruction through a balanced literacy approach in which students are provided with the right balance of skills, strategies, and materials to become excellent readers, writers, and oral speakers. Teachers will develop students' reading and writing skills through:
- read-alouds,
- shared reading,
- guided reading,
- independent reading,
- modeled/shared writing,
- interactive writing,
- and independent writing.
Math instruction using the research and standards based Math Trailblazers program with which students will learn to problem solve in real world contexts, and integrate science and language arts skills.
Science instruction using the FOSS (Full Option Science System) program that allows students to learn scientific concepts through hands-on investigations.
Fine Arts instruction in both art and music, as well as exposure to, and experiences with a wide range of visual and performing arts through arts partnerships - all integrated into the core curricula.
Library Science/Technology instruction where students learn how to locate and acquire information form a variety of resources.
Physical Education that stresses the importance of physical health and nutrition, as well as team work and living a healthy lifestyle.
